Whether you've lived in your house for 25 years or you've just moved into your new home, you want to make sure your plumbing works! There is nothing worse than waking up at 3 am hearing water running into your kitchen or returning home from work to find a flood. Here are a few things we recommend to homeowners to run through to ensure their plumbing is working properly!

  1. Water Heater

Is your water heater showing any signs of rust? This could indicate a leak and that it needs repaired or replaced. Water heaters are also recommended to be flushed every 6 months to once per year. Ensuring that your water heater is flushed helps extend the life of it as well as perform its function properly.

  1. Toilets

Flush all the toilets in your house one by one and listen to when they stop running. If your toilet is consistently running, this could be the flapper, fill valve, or the water level in your tank. You will want to get that looked at. Another item to check with your toilets is if it's wobbly. This could be a sign that it needs to be reset and sealed.

  1. Drains

Run all the drains in your home one by one. This includes sinks and tubs. Watch how the water drains - is there bubbling? Do you notice it's draining slow or backing up? These could be signs that there is something in your pipes that needs cleared.

  1. Fixtures

Run all the faucets, showers, and tubs with both hot and cold water. How is the pressure holding? Are there leaks? Is the water coming through both hot and cold?

  1. Water Damage

Walk through your house and see if there is any signs of water damage. Do you see water stains or warping? If so, call a professional to come assess what needs done to prevent further damage.

  1. Shut Off Valve

Do you know where your water shut off valve is? If you ever get a leak, you want to ensure that 1. You know where to locate the shut off valve so you can prevent further water damage from happening and 2. It is working properly.

  1. Hose Spigots

Check your hose bibs outside of your home to see if they're leaking. Old hose bibs can degrade over time causing leaks. You will want to replace that if you're noticing one is leaking before damage occurs to the interior and exterior of your home.

Owning a home can be stressful, but if you maintain the preventative maintenance and keep an eye out for signs that something is wrong, then it can help mitigate the overall damages and/or the extent they cause.
